Story
My classmate has died an untimely and shocking death.
Rumor has it that she jumped as a sort of ritual to prevent the end of the world.
The end of the world, eh? Could that truly be?
I suppose it doesn’t matter whether it could or not.
Herd enough people in one place that believe in the same story, and it might as well be true.
All the while, one boy amongst the crowd heralds a prophecy of his own.
He calls her death an omen of a new world on the horizon, one with no beginning nor end.
The “End Sky”.
And now, all hell has broken loose within our school.
I’m reminded of a story from the Gospel of Mark.
“He gave them permission, and the impure spirits came out and went into the pigs.
The herd, about two thousand in number, rushed down the steep bank into the lake and were drowned.”
Much like my classmates, on a warpath to their own destruction.
I wonder, then, if the source is this calamity that they so fear.
Or perhaps could it be that the very nature of the world’s discontinuity will tear it apart.
Can madness alone twist and warp the very reality of what’s to come, gradually perverting their perception?
Minakami Yukito. Wakatsuki Kotomi. Takashima Zakuro. Mamiya Takuji.
Four different people, with four different perspectives on the “End Sky”.
But what, exactly, is the “End Sky”?
A delusion born from the anxious words of man?
Or...
Characters
-
- Minakami Yukito
-
A rational young man, and thus, one who understands the confines of pure reason.
He mulls over the meaning behind Wittgenstein’s quote, “Whereof one cannot speak, thereof one must be silent”.
Although he casts doubt on these prophecies of the endtimes, he is inevitably drawn toward the “End Sky”, that which lies beyond human description.
His is the first and the final view, and thus, he perceives the truth.
-
- Wakatsuki Kotomi
-
A real go-getter type of girl.
She’s Yukito’s childhood friend and classmate, and hers is the second view.
Always on her feet and a firm believer in defending what’s right, it’s no surprise she ends up caught in this whirlpool of madness.
Although she’s never told him so, she’s got a bit of a crush on a certain someone.
-
- Takashima Zakuro
-
She offers her own life to prevent the end of the world.
As such, she lies at the very eye of this storm, and her actions determine the very nature of this incident.
Hers is the third view, that which reveals the heart of all this chaos.
-
- Mamiya Takuji
-
A boy that has no qualms declaring that he has surpassed the confines of human existence.
The shepherd who will lead his flock to the “End Sky”.
Through his, the fourth view, we come to understand how one askew line of perception comes to bring the world to rot.
-
- Otonashi Ayana
-
She who knows all, yet knows nothing.
She who is one, yet all.
A girl.
-
- Yokoyama Yasuko
-
Her older stepbrother is one of Yukito’s classmates.
She’s a member of the kendo club alongside Kotomi, and admires her greatly.
However, when she is enveloped by the oncoming calamity, her thoughts of Kotomi too turn to madness.
-
- Kiyokawa Asumi
-
Yukito’s stern and serious homeroom teacher.
However, she lacks much in the way of educational experience, and thus, is still adjusting to her position.
It is because she is timid underneath that stern exterior that she is overtaken by Mamiya’s madness, and is corrupted as a result.
-
- Riruru
-
At first, she was just a doodle of Takuji’s in his hideout.
But as the “End Sky” draws near, she is given form, and begins to speak of a prophecy.
Surely, she’s just one of his delusions, right...?
